LINEAR-YAW-STABILIZER™

The Linear-Yaw-Stabilizer™ provides a means for mitigating the detrimental effects of using conventionally designed railroad freight car truck at both relatively high and low speeds. This device stabilizes the inter-axle dynamics of the car truck without affecting the effectiveness of the vertical suspension system. Moreover, by using the principal of a pre-loaded linear yaw spring it allows the friction damping wedges of the vertical suspension to function optimally without binding due to truck warp.

The new truck performance specification, M-976 Truck Performance Specification Rail Car, adopted by the Association of American Railroads requires performance not achievable by traditional freight car truck designs. The Linear-Yaw-Stabilizer™ provides the proper warp restraint between the truck’s side frame and bolster to meet the required dynamic performance over the life of the freight car truck.

Linear-Yaw-Stabilizer™ Benefits:

Long-term dynamic performance.
1580% Increase of the truck warp stiffness at empty car.
350% Increase of the truck warp stiffness at loaded car.
Reduced diagonal wheel flange wear.
Reduced lateral dynamics and wear between wheel and rail.
Increased empty car stability
Improved loaded car curving dynamics.
Increases the supply base of truck castings by being adaptable to existing and new truck designs.
Not affected by temperature.
No modification or restrictions of brake components.
No interference with any hot box detector method.
No interference with car index or pusher devices.
No change in center plate or coupler height.
No interference with the vertical suspension system.
No interference with truck road bed rail clearance.
No substantial increase in un-sprung mass.
Decreased reliance on critical CCSB’s pre-loads.
Eliminates friction wedge pocket side wall wear.
Increase the tare weight by less than 2%.

Who We Are:

J-RINE Company is a privately held corporation founded in 2004 with its headquarters and manufacturing facilities located in the state of Tennessee. Our mission is to develop and commercialize advanced freight car truck suspension components to meet the even increasing demands being imposed upon railroad freight car truck suspensions and track structure. We believe that a strong research and development effort is the only way to provide truly step-out technology. The Linear-Yaw-Stabilizer™ pre-loaded yaw spring between the side frames and bolster is step-out technology solving the old problem of curving and stability of freight car trucks or freight wagon bogies.

Robert Bullock is founder and President of J-RINE Company.  He is an expert in railroad freight car truck design and development. He retired from Standard Car Truck Company as Vice President of Technological Resources with 28 years of experience in freight car truck development and commercialization.

Why Linear:

Making the inter-axle shear stiffness or truck warp resistance linear provides a stable solution and greatly reduces chaos. In all conventional three piece freight car trucks the warp resistance is depended upon non-linear friction and gap elements between the side frames and bolster. These non-linear elements result in the truck having non-preferred (non-squared) running geometry and dynamic performance depended upon initial conditions. When the linear spring characteristics of the Linear-Yaw-Stabilizer replaces the non-linear friction and gap elements the results are a preferred squared running geometry and stable dynamic performance. With classical stable dynamic solutions the critical dynamical response of the freight car can then be tuned out or above the operating speed range without the need for heavy damping.

Another advantage of not depending upon friction and gap elements is that their warp restraint decrease over time due to wear. The Linear-Yaw-Stabilizer™ will not lose stiffness over the life of the truck.
